The Basics of Starting Your Own Website

Changing Nameservers at your Registrar

My registrar is GoDaddy.com so we'll use them for an example. First to change your nameservers at your registrar login to your account.  Click on Manage Domains. Next click on your domain name. It should be hyperlinked. Lately they've been automatically set to Lock Status so you'll have to click on unlock domain on the right before you can change it. After that it might take a 30 seconds or so for it to unlock. Check by clicking on your domain again. Now again on the right hand side look under Nameservers Summary. Below that you'll see your current nameserver information. It will look something like

NS1.MYHOST.COM
NS2.MYHOST.COM

Next click on where it says, "Click here to see details or to modify. " On the right you'll see three boxes that contain your nameserver information. Simply change the nameserver information to what your new web host has given you and save the changes. Usually, this information is in your first confirmation email when you get after setting up an account with a web host.

Basically, on any registrar your going to be looking for something very similar. If you see your nameserver information you know your in the right place. It usually says it can be 24-48 hours before your domain points to your new web host, but I've seen it go as fast as 10 minutes before.
