Webmaster Tips & Tutorials - Help on creating your own website
The Basics of Starting Your
Own Website
Domain Basics
Here are some information on what
the extensions mean on domain names like .com, .net etc.
Getting a domain of course can come at the same time or before getting a
web host as you may be able to order the domain through the web host.
Be careful though it might cost you more money to do it that way. They might
even say it's free, but charge you more for it the next year than going
ahead and going through a registrar.
One good deal to check out is Bluehost.
Not only can you host 5 domains on one account, but you can also get a
domain name for free for the life of your account with them. I've talked to
their tech support on this, and was told that if and when you decide to take
your domain name somewhere else you can, but of course you will be
responsible for paying the registrar from that point on. Don't get a .WS
with them. I did that and apparently they weren't set up properly to deal
with that extension and it ended up costing me a lot more per year as I had
to start going through a WS registrar. One
thing to keep in mind too, is that it can be a little easier to movie to
another web host if necessary by having your domain registered yourself with
a reputable registrar. The first registrar to really bring the prices down
was GoDaddy.com
Before they came out prices were up there around 20-30 dollars a year for a
.com. Generally, their prices run around 8.95 a year for a domain. Now
with a Domain registrar the power is in your hand. Say your web host ticks
you off. You don't have to go through them to get your domain name
moved. You simply login and change the name server
where your domain name points to. More information
